Frigiliana is widely regarded as the most beautiful village in Andalusia, a distinction it has earned through an extraordinary concentration of whitewashed Moorish architecture set against the Sierra de Almijara mountains above Nerja. The upper barrio (Barribarto) is one of the best-preserved Mudéjar quarters in Spain — a protected historic zone of impossibly narrow lanes, tiled doorways, and flowering balconies that has changed little in five centuries.
The village sits at 300 metres above sea level, 6km from Nerja, and was the site of the last Moorish rebellion on the Spanish mainland in 1569. This history is depicted in ceramic tile murals throughout the old quarter, giving the village a cultural richness that complements its visual beauty. The local economy is built on tourism, artisan workshops, and the production of molasses from sugar cane — the only village in Europe still producing it industrially.
Property in Frigiliana is the most premium and limited-supply market in the Axarquía. Strict heritage planning regulations mean almost no new development is permitted in or near the old quarter, and demand from international buyers who want authentic village character consistently exceeds supply. Buyers here are typically seeking a primary residence or high-value holiday home rather than a buy-to-let investment — the authenticity is irreplaceable.
