Cómpeta is the Axarquía's premier mountain village, perched at 640 metres on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Almijara-Alhama Natural Park. The village is the cultural and commercial centre of the mountain comarca, with a well-preserved historic centre of whitewashed houses clustered around a 16th-century Mudéjar church and a main square that hosts one of the region's most celebrated wine festivals each August.
The surrounding landscape is spectacular and varied — vineyards terraced into the hillsides, almond and olive groves, and access to over 200km of marked hiking trails into the Natural Park. The Sierra de Almijara provides reliable snow in winter and excellent walking conditions from autumn through spring, attracting outdoor enthusiasts from across the region. Mountain biking, climbing, and birdwatching are all well established.
Cómpeta has developed a small but well-established international community, predominantly British and German, who are drawn by the combination of dramatic scenery, authentic village life, and property prices that represent the best value per square metre in the entire Axarquía. The trade-off is distance: 1h15 to the airport and limited public transport mean a car is essential. For buyers seeking a full-time escape from urban life, or a character-rich holiday home, Cómpeta is unmatched in the region.
